Thesis. Its communications and datacenter segment is growing 62% and it is engaged with four of the five largest transceiver suppliers β genuine silicon photonics exposure that corroborates Tower's ramp β but at 16% of revenue it is a confirming indicator, not a tradeable expression of the theme.
Reviewed 19 Sep 2026, after Q2 2026 results and the August competitive developments. Next review after Q3 2026 earnings on 4 Nov 2026.
What it does
GlobalFoundries is a US-headquartered specialty foundry β it manufactures other companies' chip designs, focused on differentiated mature-node processes rather than the leading edge. It serves automotive, smartphone, IoT, communications infrastructure and datacenter markets. Silicon photonics is its fastest-growing area and a small share of revenue, and that gap is the whole reading of this page.
Like TSEM, it captures the passive optical layer β silicon cannot emit light, so an external laser is always required.
A segment growing 62% inside a company growing 6% is a fact about the industry, not an investment in it. The mix, not the growth rate, is what has to change here.
Bull case
- Communications infrastructure and datacenter revenue +62% YoY and +20% sequentially β the fastest growth since 2022. Full-year segment guidance raised to 50β60% from the high 30s
- Non-IFRS gross margin a record 29.9%, up roughly 500bps β real operating improvement, not mix
- Silicon photonics revenue expected to more than double in 2026, targeting a >$1B run rate by end-2028
- Engaged with four of the five largest optical transceiver suppliers, with seven new design wins in Q2
- SCALE platform (Silicon Photonics Co-packaged Advanced Light Engine) aimed at co-packaged optics, with seven active engagements and one tapeout completed in Q2
- Bought its way into silicon photonics rather than building it β acquired Advanced Micro Foundry, a Singapore SiPho wafer foundry, integrating its assets, IP and engineers into the Fotonix platform. Faster than an organic build, and it removes a competitor from the field
- $300M US Commerce Department silicon photonics award (with Commerce taking ~1% equity), plus a separate $375M quantum manufacturing grant. The US footprint carries policy value under export controls and onshoring incentives
- Q2 net income $167M, diluted EPS $0.30
Bear case
- Total revenue $1.786B grew only 6% YoY. The 62% datacenter growth is real but the segment is only ~16% of revenue β the company grows at 6% while the exciting part grows at 62%
- Automotive and smartphone revenue weakened in the quarter, offsetting the datacenter strength
- The stock trades on the broad foundry cycle, not on optics, and will until the segment is a much larger share of revenue
- The >$1B silicon photonics run-rate target is an end-2028 goal β years out
- Mature-node specialty foundry is competitive: UMC, SMIC, Samsung and TSMC's trailing-edge capacity all compete
- Three patent infringement claims outstanding against TSEM β direct competitors in active litigation
- It fell 7% on 18 August alongside Tower (β10%) and UMC (β7%) on a WSJ report about ~$3 trillion of off-balance-sheet AI commitments across nine tech companies. Nothing company-specific, but it shows what actually moves the stock
Major customers
- Four of the five largest optical transceiver suppliers β not named individually, but this almost certainly overlaps COHR, LITE and their peers
- Automotive semiconductor makers and tier-1 suppliers β a major segment, currently weak
- Smartphone and RF chip designers β also currently weak
- IoT and industrial chip designers β the broad specialty base
- Communications infrastructure customers β the +62% segment
- US government β CHIPS-related awards and quantum manufacturing grants; a funder as much as a customer
Read-through. GlobalFoundries is the manufacturing layer beneath the Photonics category alongside TSEM, and its 62% datacenter growth independently corroborates the silicon photonics ramp Tower is reporting β two direct competitors describing the same demand from opposite sides, which is stronger evidence than either alone. But because optics is only ~16% of revenue here, it is a confirming indicator rather than a way to own the theme; Tower is the purer vehicle. The more important cross-read is competitive: the silicon photonics foundry race now has four serious entrants building simultaneously β TSM (COUPE in production, PIC capacity toward 25K wafers/month by 2028), UMC (first mass-produced SiPho wafers from Singapore), Tower (Japan, Q4 2027) and GlobalFoundries via AMF β while Nomura expects 800G and 1.6T module shipments to double in 2026 with SiPho penetration at 50β70%. Demand is confirmed from every direction, and so is supply.
What would change the view
- Communications infrastructure and datacenter as a percentage of total revenue β currently ~16%. The mix-shift metric that decides whether this re-rates
- Whether total revenue growth accelerates above 6%
- Silicon photonics revenue disclosed standalone, and progress toward the >$1B end-2028 target
- SCALE co-packaged optics engagements converting from tapeout to volume
- Automotive and smartphone segment recovery β the drag, and the faster route to better headline growth
- Tower patent litigation outcome
- LTA and deferred revenue balances in the 10-Q β the foundry analogue to backlog, and still unpulled on this page
Update log
19 Sep 2026 β Converted to the standard template. The "not verified this session" flag on the Backlog property remains: GlobalFoundries does not headline a backlog figure, and the long-term-agreement and deferred-revenue balances in the 10-Q are still the gap. Removed the rank line.
31 Aug 2026 β AMF acquisition and competitive context documented. The structural read unchanged: genuine and accelerating optical exposure, but at ~16% of revenue the stock trades on the foundry cycle.
18 Aug 2026 β Fell 7% to ~$49.78 on the sector-wide AI-financing scare. Still up ~53% year to date.
Q2 2026 β Revenue $1.786B (+6% YoY); non-IFRS gross margin a record 29.9% (+~500bps); net income $167M; diluted EPS $0.30. Communications infrastructure and datacenter +62% YoY, +20% sequentially, with full-year segment guidance raised to 50β60%. Seven new design wins; seven SCALE engagements with one tapeout.
Nov 2025 β Advanced Micro Foundry acquisition announced.
Probabilities: strengthen ~50% / weaken ~33%.
